A Letter To My Student Loans

Dear Student Loans

First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for being available to me when I needed it most. If it weren’t for you, I would not be where I am today. I would not be the person I am today. I would not have had the opportunities or experiences I have been able to have so far in life.

Thank you for being understanding and low-interest, I really appreciate that.

In the years that we have been together, I have not taken advantage of you. I have not forgotten why I owe you all I do. I have not forgotten why I signed up for this in the first place.

While you were offering to help me out of my not-so-great situation, I did not expect you to pay for everything just because you were willing to do so. I am not embarrassed of our relationship. I never felt I was your slave. We had a business deal, still do, and I promise I will follow-through.

If you remember, when we first met, I was living in a poor situation without a way to get out. You provided me that escape. If it weren’t for you, who knows where I would be right now. Certainly not college educated with a successful career and plenty of life experiences. I cannot thank you enough for that.

I realize you get the short end of the stick sometimes. You put yourself out there for a lot of people just to have them let you down when they’re through with you.

I realize some people think they’re too good for you. Some people stay in bad situations because they think you’re complicated, annoying, and slow (aren’t we all sometimes).

I am sending this to you as a reminder that I do thank you for all you have done for me. I know I’m in the not-so-fun-part of our relationship right now and do get cranky about having to repay you, but when it comes down to it, I cannot repay you enough.

You did more than just fund my tuition. You were my escape from a poor and abusive home situation. You were my door to job opportunities, travel opportunities, personal opportunities. You were my window into a future of real success and possibilities. You provided a path, not always a smooth one, but a path nonetheless. I would not have had a path otherwise.

Even though I may forget sometimes, I appreciate everything you have done for me.

Sincerely,
Leslie

I really liked this post. So many PFers talk about how much they HATE their loans, but it is important to step back and realize what they did for us. I couldn’t have gone to college without loans either, and I don’t regret my loans at all.

*slow clap* I couldn’t agree more.

Bravo and cheers! I feel completely the same way- sometimes it was just ‘another bill’ and others it was some agonizing dark shadow that followed me around. Now with a mortgage instead, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel since my student loans and I called it quits. Or maybe I should say ended our relationship mutually. :)

  5. I really like this! Well written =)
